Suffolk's Gateway Partnership:

Delivering Kickstart for our employers & young people

Suffolk Councils, working with the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, are helping to deliver a brand-new national programme to boost opportunities for young people in the workplace.

The Kickstart scheme provides six-month employment placements for 16-24 year olds on Universal Credit - assisting them to gain the skills and experience they need to succeed in the future.

The scheme provides funding to the employer to cover the wages of each young person (equivalent of up to 25 hours a week of national minimum wage) as well as extra funding to support the development of the young person.

In Suffolk, we are delivering Kickstart through a public sector partnership, alongside skills and training providers (including our colleges), with Suffolk Chamber of Commerce acting as the “Gateway” organisation for employers wishing to register their interest.  Drawing on the strengths of multiple organisations and services to provide information, support and advice we can help you create high quality placements for young people, giving them a much-needed opportunity during these challenging times.  Through the Gateway you can access our high-quality wrap-around programme of support that will benefit the young person in acquiring new skills and experience throughout the duration of their time with you, and as they progress in their chosen field.

In registering for Kickstart placements through our partnership your company will benefit from:

  • An in-depth understanding of the complexities of the application process, which will ensure as smooth and as easy a journey for you from initial interest to placement confirmation.

  • Easy access to DWP staff at all levels of operation to address queries and blockages.

  • The bespoke account management skills of our Kickstart Scheme Coordinator, Emma Alderton in supporting you, as an employer, throughout the process

  • The integrated and cost-effective wraparound offer from our high quality and trusted Gateway partners, including all of the county’s Further Education colleges. Including, East Coast College, Suffolk New and West Suffolk College.

At the launch of Kickstart Government restricted direct applications to those employers who could deliver a minimum of 30 placements.  However, with a target of at least 250,000 placements nationwide by December 2021, Government have now announced that direct applications for Kickstart placements will be welcomed by all companies, regardless of the number of placements they wish to apply for.

Naturally, we welcome the government's renewed commitment to the scheme, however we believe that our integrated partnership approach will continue to deliver the best outcomes for both our smaller and medium sized businesses, through significantly simplified administration; and for Suffolk’s young people who are seeking a high quality placement with an integrated wrap around package of support.
